Pining for the Fjords
A long squawk
A video to hate
9th-Dec-2011 08:31 am
Rick Perry must have spent a fortune to get this ad on the air in Iowa, because I can't flip a channel without seeing it. It's well on its way to becoming the most disliked video on YouTube, and I encourage you to listen for as long as you can and record your own reaction there. Right now, all anyone is hearing about Iowa is how well hateful, right-wing politics is playing here. That's because only the Republican nomination is up for grabs. The nature of the caucus system means that only people willing to drag themselves out in freezing weather and spend a few hours in an elementary school gym arguing and shuffling around participate. Which means that the system is skewed to the more extreme end of the Republican base, the kind of people who still haven't figured out that gay marriage is no threat even though it's been legal here for years and the only documented effect is a slight bump to the economy because of the people coming in from out-of-state to get married. The kids in this video are more representative of the Iowans I meet every day:

Thanks to Rick P., I found out that you can "dislike" a YouTube video multiple times. It's really quite a lot of fun.

He's passed the half million mark now! Thanks for voting. It makes it marginally less annoying every time he shows up on my TV screen.

You can't risk having some pagan gay person coming along and saying nasty things, now can you?

But gays are free to marry, as long as they marry someone of the opposite sex, and non-Christians are free to worship, as long as they worship Republican Jesus (who bears little resemblance to the man described in the gospels). Anything else is "special".

I managed about 2 minutes of the Bachman. Then I had to give up. God, she's vile.

I was at a Barnes and Noble book signing where she walked in the door, shook hands, and launched into an anti-immigrant rant. Everything she says reeks of ignorance and hatred.

Absolutely!

I appreciated seeing the teenagers challenge her. That said, the adults' applause for her statements on dismantling the Department of Education and gay marriage was disquieting.

Very few of the adults were clapping. In fact, most of the crowd looked unhappy. I think most of the applause came from her campaign staff. She got more support at the book signing. Her comments in the video are too crazy for more than a very few Iowans.

I want to know what mythical land/time these people think we need to go back to, because IT NEVER EXISTED OMG. Rick Perry makes my skin crawl, and Bachman is NUTS.

Thank you! I was born in the 50s, and even though I was lucky enough to grow up in a nice suburban neighborhood with great parents, I do not look back on that time with affection. When I tell my kids that there were no black kids at all in my elementary school and that I remember reading want ads in the paper that specified which gender you had to be to apply for a job, they stare at me as if I'm a refugee from some evil planet.

Yes, I saw both of these the other day. It was both painful and sad, I can't imagine watchings these constantly showing up on your set.

The good news is that this kind of thing is not working with the general electorate. Recently we had a special election for a nearby state senate seat. The Republican tried to win by linking the Democrat to Obama and attending rallies by anti-gay marriage groups. The Democrat won by a very nice margin.

Thanks! I like that much better than the other parodies I've seen.

I can not figure out how we can't get rid of Perry as our governor. Luckily he seems to have shot himself so thoroughly in the foot that he has no chance of being president.

It's completely amazing how clueless Bachmann is.

I'm sorry, but I'm not willing to take one for your state by promoting him to the White House. Maybe after his "Ooops!" incident, you'll be able to vote him out. And at least the governor's office in Texas is a weak one compared to some other states.

Bachmann hasn't even noticed her husband is gay.

Dear God, I'd never help put Perry in the White House! too bad his bid didn't mean he resigned though.

Perry makes me so fucking happy. All my helpless hatred of Bush is visited on his failure.

Bachmann: human? animatronic? I saw her in person and I still don't know.

In conclusion, the world depresses me.

That video of Bachmann actually encourages me a lot. It's not just the awesome kids. If you look at the crowd, you can see there are a handful of older people clapping, but a lot more of varying ages just sitting there looking unbelieving or unhappy. There's one middle-aged guy in the front row who seems to be hunching over so he doesn't jump up and attack her physically or verbally. I don't think there were enough people cheering her to fill up that ugly bus she rides around in.

She couldn't even pull together a small crowd of real supporters at the Pizza Ranch in Waverly, Iowa. On other hand, three kids were willing to martyr themselves by challenging her when they could have been hanging out in the mall.

That's a brilliant way of looking at it. Thank you. :)

LOL. It's hard to parody a self-parodizing ass like Perry, but this guy did it!
